TABLES AND SMALL TABLES

How to choose the perfect dining table

The table to be inserted in the dining area is one of fundamental components of a home furnishings. In addition to taking into account aesthetics standards that we want to be respected, the table must be functional and satisfy practical needs.  We must consider various aspects: Dimensions, shape, material, color, and for each of them there are many variations to choose from. Let’s see together what to take into account when buying a dining table to avoid mistakes!

Space at our disposal

In the old apartments it was usual to find the so-called “dining room”, an entire room, more or less large, specially dedicated to large family lunches. In modern houses it is now difficult to find them because we prefer to create a unique environment for the living area in which to place, among other things, the dining table. So, it is essential to have a clear idea of where to place the table and how much space we have at our disposal.

Therefore, we must calculate about 80 centimetres to leave between the table and the walls of the room; if on the other hand, near the table there is a passage area, we need to leave about 120 centimetres in order not to obstruct the movements.  At this point we will know what size your table will have!

Table dimensions

Despite the size of the table should depend on the space available, there are standard measures that a table must respect in order to be considered as such. Let’s not forget that the primary function of this piece of furniture is to host our table mates during lunches or dinners. So, it is essential that it is at least large and comfortable.

The standard height from the floor to the table top must be between 70 and 75 cm, so that the legs of our guests can easily enter. Furthermore, since plates and glasses will be placed on the table, the minimum width that the surface of the table must have is 80 cm; A narrower dining table is highly discouraged as it would be impractical and uncomfortable! Finally, regarding the length of the table: The distance between legs must be at least 62 cm and each guest must have 60 cm at his disposal to easily eat and interact with the others.

Shape of the table or small table

As for the shape give vent to your tastes, always remembering how much space you have at your disposal! The most common shape is certainly the rectangular one, as it allows, with the same overall dimensions, a greater number of seats. The drawback of this type of tables is the forced introduction of a hierarchy among guests, since it will be necessary to establish who among them will seat at "the head of the table”. An efficient alternative is the round table or small table, which eliminates the problem of seating and hierarchy, even if it takes up more space.

A good compromise is the oval table: Small sizes in any case and no hierarchy.

Materials

It’s time to indulge yourself with the material! If you want to make a great impression in your modern living, use a crystal table! But if you have children at home we do not recommend it from the heart: It is a delicate material, which must be used with care as it is easily subject to scratches and breaks.

The wooden table is undoubtedly more solid, although it is still a delicate material, it requires less maintenance: Just occasionally polish it with specific products to make it come back as good as new. Among other things, wooden tables, depending on finishes, conform to different furnishings styles: For example, oak tables with essential and clean lines are ideal for modern rooms. Finally, alternative materials such as plastic, Plexiglas or steel are certainly suitable in modern rooms even if with the time they may bore.
